Soap Opera

Ideas of the soap:-
Title- 'Eaton' - use the Eaton Oak pub to help with remembrance of the soap. The soap will run for 30 minutes.

Target audience- 15-25 years old- soaps always attract a mass audience, as there is always something for someone to like or relate to.
Channel- BB1, it will always be available on BBC iplayer, as well as an repeat on BB3. Main characters- Teenagers, Middle aged and the elderly.
Main storylines- Teenagers drinking in a park, where there is peer pressure to drink. Another storyline involves a teenage boy buying drugs. A middle ages women having an affair and an elderly woman posing her husband. Setting- used many that were iconic of a soap opera, for example, pub, park and houses.

From here, i was able to create storyboard, so that i was able to visually plan my soap opera.
This also helped me when I was filming as it allowed me to know exactly what I wanted to achieve when filming, It also allowed me to figure out how long each shot was going to be. I was able to adapt, expand and develop my ideas with in the stages of filming because I had an idea of what I wanted from each, shot, frame, action and character. I think that it was important to have this behind me, it made filming easier and it took less time. It also meant that editing became easier as I had less outtakes to cut out allowing me more time to focus on small details.
Here are the storyboards:-

Questionnaire Analysis- Target Audience.

This is the analysis of my target audience questionnaire. All of my questionnaire participants were female because they are the people who mainly watch soaps; therefore these are the people I am aiming to attract.

Graph one shows that my participants all watch soaps, however overall they described their viewing habits as ‘quite often’.

Overall Eastenders seems to be the most popular soap; it seems that soaps that are shown around 6-8 in the evening deem to be more popular with my target audience. As Doctors for example which is apart of day time television does not seem to be as popular with my target audience. This is probably because of the commitments they attend during the day like school, college and work.

This shows me that my target audience watches soaps frequently on a weekly basis.

My questionnaires have shown me that my target audiences like to watch soaps because they are entertaining. I think that the dramatic storylines which creates uses and gratifications’ for the audience is important. Therefore I will have to mirror this within my soap so that it attracts my audience to watch my soap.
5) Is there a specific time you watch soaps? – All of my participants answered this question as ‘evening times’ as this is when they are able to settle down and relax after a day. It maybe that they watch soaps after dinner, before bed or whilst eating dinner, therefore I will aim to put my soap on between the times of 6-8 as this is where audiences will available to watch my soap.

I think is question is important as it helps to me to develop my characters with in influence of my target audience. As I am able to create characters that I know my audience will be able to relate to, so that they are able to enjoy watching my soap.

By doing this questionnaire and analysis I have been able to have a better insight of what my target audience wants from a soap opera. I now can create and develop characters, where by my audience will be able to relate to them and the issues and storylines they occur in. By using dramatic and entertaining storyline, uses and gratifications will be created for my audience pleasure, meaning they will want to watch more of the soap. The success of existing soaps shows through the amounts of times they are watched by my targeted audience and the reasons why they are watched helps me to understand how to create a successful soap opera- which will help me when creating my soap trailer.

Target Audience Questionnaire.

Target audience questionnaire- I gave this questionnaire to 10 people ranging from the ages of 15-25 to help me gain a better understanding of what my target audiences wants and expects from soaps.

- Doctors                                             - Neighbours
- Other

3.      How many days a week do you watch a soap?

-5-6                                            - 7 + days

4.      Why do you watch soaps?

- Because my family watch them      - I don’t watch them

-Teenagers                                          - Middle aged
- Elderly                                               - All of theses stated

Target Audience-

To be able to create a successful soap opera, I needed to understand more about my target audience so that I was able to understand of what type of characters, social issues and storylines they would be able to relate to. Therefore I analysis things which my target audience would be able to relate to, what they liked, disliked and what their lives consisted of. I did this for the youngest age of my target audience and the oldest.

Theses show my ideas of what my target audiences lives would consist of, I think it is important to understand them in order to attract them. By using my analysis I am able to create characters and storylines that will provide my audience with entertainment.

Research on Soap Opera

By researching other different soaps like Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks, I am able to use the conventions from real soaps and interpret them into my soap trailer, especially when creating my characters and locations.

All soaps use many different characters, like teenagers, middle aged and the elderly, so the target audience has somebody to relate to. Research shows that audiences of Soaps like to be able to relate to characters. This is because Soaps are entertaining, where the audience switches off and is able to relax due to gratification from others issues and problems within the soap. The audience is able to create a ‘parasocial relationship’ with characters where they take pleasure from being able to understand how a certain character feels or behaves in particular circumstances, due to themselves having been in a similar situation or having knowledge of the subject. It is said that audiences develop a ‘personal identity’ by being exposed to many different realistic issues, allowing audiences to form their own opinions, attitudes and reflect on their own lives.

Theses are they types of characters I will have to mirror in order to make a successful relatable soap opera:-
Eastenders-

Coronation Street-

Emmerdale-

Hollyoaks-

Therefore it is no surprise that soaps are constantly addressing the issues of relationship breakdowns, births, deaths, affairs, adoption and fostering, murder, law breaking ect. The reason for this, is that the audience in some way are able to relate to storylines. Soaps appeal to a variety of people, as characters as based around ordinary, working class characters, where storylines express realism. For example within Eastenders storylines like HIV, illnesses such as Bipolar Disorder, affairs, death, domestic abuse, marriage, homosexuality and religion have been addressed throughout the years.

There are many typical characteristics expected from a Soap Opera. For example there will always be an:-
·         Established location. For example in Eastenders it is Albert Square, Walford, London which is made up from houses, flats, number of small businesses, a pub (The Queen Vic) and a street market.  Coronation Street is set in Greater Manchester town of Weatherfield. The street consists of houses, pub (The Rovers Return) and corner shop, garage and a factory.
·         A community where everybody knows either other.
·         A few meeting places which are clear to the audience and most of the social interaction occurs in these places. For example the Queen Vic pub and café in Eastenders and Coronation Streets it is places such as the Rovers Return Pub  ect.
·         Proximity:- This is a factor of where nobody ever goes far away from the established location.
·         Established well know characters where there is a emphasis of families and the fact that characters often have ‘skeletons in their cupboards’ whereby secrets are revealed in many different ways.
^^ All of these help to create social realism for the audience

Soaps also have narrative conventions for example:-
·         Soaps are ongoing.
·         Several interweaving storylines involving different characters, where new ones are introduced where they become developed, whereas others come to an end or are left open for future storylines.
·         Where episodes are left on a cliff hanger.
·         Audience also gain gratification when dramatic irony is created.

Soaps are mainly dialogue therefore soaps consist of characters talking to each other. Realism needs to be created for the audience, by making the camera as invisible as possible, there is a eye witness effect created. Camera Shots consist of:-
  • Establishing shots (gives the audience a sense of location but can also take us from one storyline to another)
  • Over the shoulder shots
  • Two shots
  • Mid shots
  • Close up shots
  • Extreme close shots

Editing
Within soaps editing is very simple which helps to promote realism. But it can, at the same time be very complex as it needs to take the soap from one storyline to another in a natural way.

Sounds
The sounds within soaps is diegetic, again this helps to promote realism. The only sounds included are conversations, background noise and music being played in the background.  Linking on to this the also the theme tune of the soap, as it plays a major role for soaps. Not only it is recognisable for the audience, but also gives a clear indication when the programme is starting. ß Only non-diegetic device used in soaps

Lighting and Mise-en-scene
Lighting needs to look natural and realistic to represent the real world. This is the same with mise-en-scene, as costumes, interior and exterior design, props, layout and shots all help to promote stereotypical characters and the realism of the soap.

Representation
Soaps need to include many different characters, where they need to be relatable for the audience and represent society. Therefore different genders, ethnic backgrounds, sexual preferences, ages, occupations, opinions, incomes and family backgrounds need to be included.
Social issues are reflected within the storylines where different opinions are created. But soaps many play on conflicts between people, where audiences pleasures come from taking the sides of different characters.
Soaps and Women
Many people argue that soaps are more appealing to women due to domestically focused storylines. However, soaps are argued to be ‘polysemic’ which means they offer a variety of interpretations or meanings, where they are enjoyed differently by different viewers.

Soap opera are often aimed at family audiences because of the use of families in the actual soaps. Soaps are based around families and the relationships within them. It is from here where narratives are made from the problems either from inside or outside the families. Therefore by researching the different families in soaps helps to show how important they are because it means that targeted audience are able to sit down with their families to watch soaps. Here are different examples of families in existing soaps operas:-

Eastenders-

Coronation Street-

Emmerdale-

Hollyoaks-

Therefore it is important to contain a family element within soaps, not only to create realism, but it allowed audience members to relate to particular characters, storylines and issues.

Research of existing soap trailers.

It is hard to create a trailer for a new soap opera, as the target audiences of soaps are already familiar with the characters and settings. Therefore it seems that when existing soap operas are advertised for new characters or story lines they only seem to be based around the characters involved, as the audience already have knowledge on the soap not to much is revealed. It was interesting to look at a trailer for Eastenders where Roxy and Ronnie Mitchell are introduced through the trailer to the audience, as the use of shots, music, mice-en-scene and editing helps to show how the characters are going to affect the soap.

It is also interesting to see the different editing techniques used on the trailers. As the soap conventions themselves are used to promote realism the trailers almost contradict this.

Here are a few trailers, research from the soaps of
-          Eastenders
-          Coronation Street
-          Hollyoaks
